A Community-Designed Skatepark for Rainier Beach
Rainier Beach Skatepark | Seattle, WA
Environmental Works partnered with the Seattle Parks Foundation and community leaders to help move a long-planned district skatepark at Rainier Beach Playfield from an idea toward reality. Working with Danielle Jackson of CHAMPS Resource & Service Center, Scott Shinn of Parents for Skateparks, Skate Like a Girl, and local skaters and neighbors, our team facilitated three community design workshops in 2022. Participants shared what they wanted the park to offer, including terrain for a range of ages and skill levels and welcoming places for friends, families, and neighbors to gather.
Environmental Works translated that input into a feasibility study and early concept design that helped guide the project toward funding, final design, and construction. The built skatepark includes approximately 11,500 square feet of concrete terrain, with a mix of street and transition-style features for beginning and experienced skaters. Evergreen Skateparks built the skate terrain as part of the final construction team.
After years of community advocacy, the new park carries forward a vision shaped by the people who will use it.
