Markus Barrera-Kolb

Markus was led to Environmental Works, with its dedication to community-focused work, through his engagement with social justice issues, workers’ rights, and housing equity, combined with ecological concerns and the knowledge that climate change impacts low-income communities disproportionately.

Markus brings to Environmental Works twenty years of experience in residential architecture, and nine years as a Certified Passive House Consultant (Passive House Institute US). He co-founded the regional Passive House Northwest advocacy organization in 2010. Markus holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Michigan, and a Master of Architecture from the University of Washington. He has accumulated expertise in Passive House energy modeling, building physics, and envelope detailing, and has also worked as a carpenter and fine-furniture maker.
