Childcare Modular at
Wing Luke Elementary School
The Wing Luke Elementary Child Care Center began as a used 28' x 64' modular structure. Installed in haste on a south-facing corner of the campus. It represented a commitment from the school district to provide the community with much needed before and after school care.

Shrinking public funds, the modular, and predetermined siting were all givens. The extent to which the design could celebrate the use evolved out of this context.

The design creates a transformation by adding simple-to-assemble elements to the box - augmenting the building's profile with a variety of forms and materials. Covered decks of metal and plastic provide shade, shelter and a connection with the outdoors. Wood screens shield mechanical units and act as false fronts. The clerestory play loft and low-sloped directors office project from the original rectangle, providing unique spatial experiences and required square footage.

Landscaping includes a “wetland” fed by a cistern that stores rain water collected from the roof, a flat open grass play area to the south and steep earth mounds to the east. All encourage play, discovery, and large motor development without having to provide costly playground equipment.

The interior welcomes children. Built-in cabinetry for work and storage wrap the perimeter. A wood laminate floor provides a durable and soothing surface. New, expanded windows let in abundant natural light, focus activities and provide a visual connection with the community. The expansive bulletin board walls and the display window at the entry celebrate the creations of children.
