SHARE Bunkhouse
Project Description
A new 8,000 sf building provides shelter beds for 50 men and women in separate 4-person rooms. Residents work at the facility, as part of a resident management system, in exchange for their shelter. The building also provides transitional housing for eight SHARE staff who work at other facilities. Common facilities include a kitchen/dining area, a lounge/TV room, a laundry room, and a storage room with individual lockers. The new structure replaced a 58 bed shelter in serious disrepair. The existing program remained operational throughout construction and was demolished after completion of the new facility.
Sustainable Design
This emergency shelter incorporates a number of sustainable strategies aimed at reducing operating costs and improving the long-term durability of the facility. The project incorporates gas fired hot water heating, engineered lumber, fiber cement siding and raised heel roof trusses. But the project goes further experimenting with structural insulated panels for the exterior walls. This system provides not only energy savings but also cuts job site waste and construction time.
